Inspiration, The Sea and Me.

I think I love the sea especially around the West Coast of Scotland because I was taken there so often as a teenager. I remember being 17 and going to Balnakeil Bay for the first time. I was astounded at the beauty of the place, the colour of the sea and the light reflecting off the endless sand dunes. It had quite an effect on me and I yearn for the west and the freshness of the Atlantic Ocean all through the winter.

I've been back to Balnakeil several times since and took this photo in August 2007.

In April 2003 my Husband, son and I had a wonderful week on the Island of Mull. We stayed in a lovely cottage on the edge of Fionnphort.

We arrived in time to witness a beautiful sunset over Iona.

This is a section of a painting done from a photo that my husband took of my son and I standing on the beach at Fionnphort looking over to Iona. I did this in acrylic on canvas.

Iona was another place of great inspiration. It has a feeling all of it's own, this island and again the way the light plays on the water and the freshness of the air makes you want to drink it all in then recreate it in artistic ways.

This is a little painting I did from memory after an afternoon on the North beach looking West. Although it was overcast that day, it was warm and the colours were still vibrant. The sky over Iona has the most amazing shades of turquoise and mauves that I have never seen anywhere else.

We have been back to Mull and Iona several times since and this area inspires many of my Seascapes and Landscapes.

I don't get much chance to do any painting these days so I have turned my attention and creativity to working with fabrics and felt. The following series of pictures are all Needle Felted wool and yarns onto wool.

Love your felted landscapes!
Thanks so much for commenting on my blog so I could follow you here to yours. I will add you to my RSS feed too, so I can keep plugged in from now on....
I love Scotland so much...I traveled around there by myself the summer I was 19 and have never, ever forgotten it.
And now of course my favorite mystery writer is Ian Rankin so I go to your part of the world that way...;-)
Cheers, Allie
